Ensemble music for five-part strings (with and without winds)

These works form part of a small but fascinating area of the composer's early instrumental music. Composed either at Eisenach (1708-12) or early in Frankfurt (from 1712), they are in a serious style not unlike that of J. S. Bach, with long fugues interspersed with other, contrasting movements. The violins have much soloistic writing, supported by a texture enriched by double violas. Oboes and bassoon are obbligato in no. 16, and may double the strings in nos. 9 and 10.

Although the second part down is better played by a viola, in keeping with the original French-style scoring, it is set in treble (G2) clef in our edition and is therefore playable by either viola I or violino II.
