The first modern edition of Walsh and Hare's 1700 collection, Six Sonatas or Solos, Three for a Violin, Three for the Flute, containing three recorder sonatas by Godfrey Finger (there is no attribution in the print, but Finger's authorship has been established by Dr Peter Holman) and three violin sonatas by William Croft.
Finger was one of the more talented of Purcell's contemporaries and, though born in Moravia, had a great influence on English instrumental music in the 1690s. Croft was a pupil of John Blow, and a very able composer in his own right. His violin sonatas have been unjustly neglected, for they are well-crafted, melodious works, combining English, French and Italian features.
Six Sonatas or Solos, Three for a Violin and Three for the Flute, with a Thorough Bass for the Harpsichord, Theorboe or Bass-Viol.
Compos'd by Mr Wm Crofts & an Italian M[aste]r (London: Walsh and Hare, 1700)
